Technical Manager

Position based in Ghana (West Africa)

EAA is working to unlock the tremendous potential of the West Africa apparel industry, supporting African-owned factories to grow exports to the US, UK, and Europe. EAA focuses on developing factories in a lean, sustainable, and ethical way that sets the standard for garment manufacturing in a West African context. We work closely with government and development agencies to develop an ecosystem for industrial growth -- including the launch of a Centre of Excellence for local skill development and efforts to catalyse investment in an integrated cotton value chain. By 2023 we aim to create 2,500 worthwhile jobs in the apparel sector in West Africa. This is an exciting time to join EAA.

Position overview

We have a great opportunity for someone with passion and desire to make a difference in clothing manufacturing to join us as an Technical Manager based in Ghana West Africa. This is the perfect role for someone wishing to challenge their expertise by helping to develop the industry on a new continent. This person would report to the Technical Director and work closely with the EAA teams in Ghana and Benin

Key responsibilities

The Technical Manager is responsible to ensure that all EAA production is managed correctly throughout the factory and that production lines are engineered to deliver quality production to EAA and client’s quality standards. The individual will be responsible to develop and ensure all EAA SOP’s  are in place while at the same time developing the Factory’s local management team.

 

Responsibilities include:

Product Development

  • Represent EAA for all technical meetings with brands; review tech packs and brand manuals to ensure all required information has been received and is correct.

  • Complete risk assessments with the accounts team on all new products requested for costing and sampling and document accordingly.

  • Work with the EAA product development manager and the factories to train and then complete inputs to the costing process including consumption, standard minute values, efficiency and operation lists

  • Interface with The Raw Materials Sourcing Manager to advise any technical information or testing required in order to properly source fabric and trims. Review fabric and trims sampling received before samples are made.

  • Conduct pre-sample meetings and provide hands-on support and training to factories during sampling.

  • Quality check all samples leaving the factories and communicate to brands any differences/substitutions versus the tech packs.

  • Attend via Skype/phone any client fit meetings and work with the accounts team and factory on any revised samples needed.

  • Keep EAA systems up to date with technical details required such as operations list, fabric and trim consumption, fit comments, measurement charts and sample notes.

 

Production Management

  • Work with our partner factories on product engineering to ensure the manufacturing processes are best fit for garment and for brand with the right machines in place while meeting the manufacturing cost targets.

  • Ensure Style tools (tech packs) and all technical information for production is correct, clearly communicated, and well understood by factory management prior to production start-up.

  • Conduct pre-production meetings and provide hands-on support to plan production and balance lines to meet efficiency targets.

  • Work closely with EAA accounts team to manage Critical Path and ensure timely delivery of the plan

  • Ensure daily/weekly operator targets are in place and monitor with the factory team the performance in line with agreed efficiency targets.

  • Ensure all daily efficiency and production reports are completed correctly and delivered on time.

  • Complete time studies during production to measure actual versus planned and apply learnings to future SMV calculations

  • Work with the EAA Quality manager to ensure all quality parameters are met for the order in production

  • Lead post production meetings with the EAA team and factories to identify success and learnings

  • Update the EAA system with all pre, in and post production reports

 

Factory Training and Development

  • Develop and steadily make progress against a comprehensive technical action plan, ensuring continuous improvement to reach international standards of excellence. This includes training factory management on each element and helping them understand the need for rigorous standard operating procedures.

  • Provide hands-on support to both local and expat factory management during pilot and implementation of technical improvement initiatives and systems development based on Lean principles.

  • Develop factories to understand Lean management principles and embed them into their operating models, in coordination with external Lean training initiatives in place.

  • Assist in creating and sustaining standard operating procedures (SOP’s), quality manuals and training materials for internal EAA team and factories adopting a sustainable and participatory approach

  • Work alongside the factory managers to identify skills gaps and training opportunities for both individuals and the factory as a whole.

  • Work alongside other trainers in the factory to develop a complimentary training programme that enhances skills and avoids duplication.

Qualifications, skills, and attributes required​

  • Fluent in English 

  • At least 10 years of production experience working directly in or with factories.

  • Experience of working with Western brands from the USA or Europe

  • Experience in training and developing factories and ability to demonstrate exact operations including stitching

  • Experience in working across factory teams to take a product from concept to finished production with proven teamwork skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manually determine SMV’s, complete work studys and complete product costings

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills across cultures and ability to deliver strong technical reports.

  • Good Computer/Excel and report writing skills.

  • Ability to work independently on self-directed projects with an entrepreneurial attitude

  • Previous working/living experience in a developing country, ideally in Africa

  • Ability to think critically, work hard, learn and progress.

  • Ambitious big picture thinker who is solution driven, wants to work hard, learn and progress
