Compliance Manager

Position based in Koforidua, Ghana (West Africa)

Maagrace Garment Industries Limited (MGIL) is a leading apparel manufacturing firm established in 2003 in Ghana (West Africa). With a current workforce of approximately 600 operators, the factory has the capacity to expand and accommodate up to 800 individuals. Situated in a region with a population of over a million people, MGIL stands as the largest employer, contributing significantly to the local economy.

We work with mainly large scale brands in the USA and have strict quality and compliance requirements.

MGIL has formed a strategic partnership with Ethical Apparel Africa (EAA), a sourcing company that specializes in delivering ethical, cost-competitive, and high-quality manufacturing solutions to international apparel brands operating in West Africa. Headquartered in Ghana, EAA boasts a dynamic team with extensive expertise garnered from various corners of the globe, spanning product development, quality assurance, account management, social impact, operations, and finance. EAA collaborates with factories across West Africa to elevate technical and ethical standards to meet international benchmarks. Their clientele primarily comprises international brands hailing from Europe and the USA, all seeking to establish and expand their manufacturing presence within the African continent.

Position overview

 

We have a great opportunity for someone with passion and expertise to continue to develop our Company as a Model Factory in the region. The role will be based in Koforidua which is 2 hours outside of Accra in Ghana, West Africa. This person will report to the General Manager (People and Operations) and work closely with the EAA team. They will have the following responsibilities: 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Assess MGIL's continuous progress towards health & safety, environmental, social accountability, security, risk management systems, business ethics and integrity, as well as workers’ engagement and wellbeing. empowerment (against EAA social compliance tool) and agree on corrective action plans with the Workers Committee and all Head of Departments incl. Housekeeping, Maintenance, Mechanic, Warehouse, Cutting, Finishing etc

  • Maintain its WRAP gold certificate with ongoing impactful training and risk assessment to ensure policies and procedures are enforced at all times and workers own it. Maintain high standards towards other standards or certificates received in the past (GRS, SEDEX, C-TPAT, Higg FEM etc)

  • Rigourously track data across social, environmental, H&S, security analyse it and share reports and statistics with management and the workers committee on progress made and objectives to be achieved.

  • Collect workers' feedback via ongoing focus group discussions and liaise with the HR department in supporting the Workers' Committee to grow and continue to share insights on how to continue to improve work experience

  • Develop training programs on social dialogue, social compliance with a focus on health & safety, workers’ rights, security, housekeeping, etc.

  • Work with external training providers to facilitate training to improve soft skill levels from operators to middle management 

  • Ensure systematic sustainable compliance with regards to Ghana regulation and law and suggest policies and procedures amendment accordingly.

  • Support MGIL in its Model Factory role in Ghana, demonstrating to all other factories that this is possible and desirable by sharing relevant information and tools to help others

  • In close relationship with the EAA compliance, sourcing and logistics team integrate Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in the supply chain to ensure compliance with international human rights standards.

  • Maintain and update a comprehensive risk register to identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to compliance and operations.

  • Ensure compliance with new EU regulations affecting the textile and apparel industry.

  • Work closely with the EAA Compliance and Impact team to assess worker needs and profiles via baseline surveys and contribute to the design of workers’ engagement, empowerment and wellbeing programs 

  • Complete Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) framework for each benefit programme and make recommendations for future programmes.

  • Support Brands’ / clients’ visits at the factory and highlight progress and vision on impact in order to develop engaged / sustained partnerships

  • Complete monthly reports on factory progress, risk analysis and next priorities.

  • Develop marketing material on factory social compliance and impact to share with partner brands, development agencies and funding partners (e.g. foundations).

 

Qualifications & Attributes

 

  • Fluent in English and twi 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Auditing, Health & Safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability, Ethical Trading Management, Human Rights, Law or Related Field

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Social Compliance, Quality Management Systems and EHS specifically, in factory environments preferred

  • Experience in women empowerment and gender auditing and training a plus

  • Previous experience and passion to train and build local capacity

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills across cultures and ability to deliver strong technical reports

  • Ability to work independently on self-directed projects with an entrepreneurial attitude

  • Ability to think critically, work hard, learn and progress
