Quality Manager

Position based in Koforidua, Ghana (West Africa)

Maagrace Garment Industries Limited (MGIL) is a leading apparel manufacturing firm established in 2003 in Ghana (West Africa). With a current workforce of approximately 1,000 operators, the factory is currently building an expansion to accommodate 2,000 individuals. MGIL has formed a strategic partnership with Ethical Apparel Africa (EAA), a sourcing company that specializes in delivering ethical, cost-competitive, and high-quality manufacturing solutions to international apparel brands operating in West Africa. Headquartered in Ghana, EAA boasts a dynamic team with extensive expertise garnered from various corners of the globe, spanning product development, quality assurance, account management, social impact, operations, and finance. EAA collaborates with factories across West Africa to elevate technical and ethical standards to meet international benchmarks. Their clientele primarily comprises international brands hailing from Europe and the USA, all seeking to establish and expand their manufacturing presence within the African continent.

Position overview

This is a senior managerial role for someone with both deep technical quality expertise and strong people development skills. Based in Koforidua, two hours from Accra, the Quality Manager will report to the Factory Technical Director and work closely with the EAA technical team.

The factory is at an important stage of its growth, scaling significantly in headcount and customer complexity. The right candidate will not only maintain quality standards but actively build the capability of the QA/QC team, strengthen systems, and help create a quality culture that is sustainable and less dependent on any one individual. You will be working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment where balancing production targets with quality standards requires both confidence and diplomacy.

Key responsibilities

Team development and capability building

  • Lead, coach, and develop the QA and QC teams, with a focus on building the independence and confidence of supervisors and team leads

  • Design and deliver training programs for operators and department heads, with pre and post assessments to measure outcomes

  • Conduct ongoing performance reviews and provide structured feedback and development plans

  • Build a team culture of accountability, where quality is owned at every level of the production floor

 

Quality systems and strategy

  • Develop and maintain a quality management plan that brings MGIL's systems and policies into compliance with customer and international requirements

  • Create and continuously improve SOPs tailored to MGIL's product range and customer requirements

  • Conduct risk assessments across cutting, sewing, finishing, and packing and put mitigation plans in place to ensure no issues in bulk production

  • Work closely with the merchandising and product development teams to ensure client feedback is integrated into production planning and quality decisions

 

Product development and sampling

  • Complete risk assessments with the merchandising team on all new products at costing and sampling stage

  • Quality check all samples leaving the factory and communicate clearly to brands any differences versus tech packs

  • Check patterns, specifications, and construction, resolving production impracticalities in a timely manner

 

Production quality

  • Ensure client standards for quality are planned and executed in detail from PO to PP meeting to production

  • Support factory teams in preparing and sharing daily quality reports across all departments

  • Implement and monitor DHU reports and ensure targets are achieved

  • Attend pre and post production meetings and ensure quality considerations are embedded in planning decisions

  • Act as a clear and consistent voice for quality in cross-functional discussions, including when production pressure conflicts with quality requirements

  • Be highly active in the lines, finding solutions to problems, working with the technicians and mechanics to improve quality, training operators and ensuring all goods leave on time with zero quality problems

 

Qualifications and attributes

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a similar quality leadership role in garment manufacturing

  • Proven experience managing QA/QC teams and building capability from within

  • In-depth knowledge of quality standards relevant to US and European brands

  • Experience with a broad range of product types including underwear, nightwear, schoolwear, and stretch/low GSM fabrics as well as fleece jacket and outerwear

  • Strong training and coaching skills with the ability to design programs and measure outcomes

  • Excellent communication skills in English, written and spoken

  • Ability to work constructively across departments, including in situations of competing priorities

  • Experience working in a developing country context, ideally in Africa

  • Resilient, resourceful, and comfortable working under pressure while maintaining standards

  • Proactive, self-aware, and solutions-oriented

  • Experience on shift systems an advantage
